We are a free, community-based organization helping families understand and navigate the IHSS process — from initial applications through denials and appeals.
We are currently seeking fiscal sponsorship and organizational partnerships to expand our reach and support more families across California. This page is for nonprofit leaders, fiscal sponsors, and organizations considering working with us. It outlines who we are, how we operate, and how we can work together.
Guided Families California was built from firsthand experience navigating the IHSS system as a parent.
Like most families, I initially believed IHSS was straightforward — apply, provide documentation, and receive support based on need. That was not the reality. After going through the process personally, I saw how easily families can be denied or reduced — not because they don’t qualify, but because of how their case is evaluated, documented, and presented.
What stood out most was what happens after a denial. Families are left confused, overwhelmed, and trying to figure out what went wrong. Most don’t realize that the process isn’t just about need — it’s about how that need is communicated within the system. Without that understanding, even strong cases fall apart.
That’s where this work started. I began helping other families understand their notices, prepare their documentation, and approach the process with clarity and structure.
Today, most families who come to Guided Families California are not at the beginning — they are coming in after being denied or reduced, looking for answers and a clear path forward. What began as one-on-one support has grown into a structured, free service designed to guide families through the IHSS process with confidence.
IHSS is one of California’s most important programs for families of children with disabilities. But the process is not designed to be easy to navigate, and families are often denied or reduced — not because of their child’s condition, but because of how their case was documented and presented.
Common issues include:
• Incomplete or unclear documentation
• Critical details not emphasized during the home visit
• Misinterpretation of a child’s actual level of need
• “Age-appropriate” reasoning applied incorrectly
• Lack of preparation before the assessment
Most families who come to us are not at the beginning of the process. They’ve already been denied or reduced and are trying to understand what went wrong and what to do next.
There are very few free, non-legal resources available at that point.
That is the gap Guided Families California exists to fill.
Guided Families California provides free, one-on-one guidance to help families break down what happened in their case and understand how to move forward.
Our support is focused on clarity, preparation, and making sure nothing important gets missed.
We help families:
• Understand their denial or reduction notice in plain language
• Identify what information actually matters in their specific case
• Prepare documentation and supporting evidence for reassessment or appeal
• Know what to expect at each step, including fair hearings
• Approach the process in a way that clearly reflects their child’s real level of need
Our goal is simple: make sure every family’s situation is clearly understood, accurately represented, and not overlooked.
We are careful to stay within the boundary between guidance and legal advice. We educate and prepare — we do not represent families in legal proceedings. This keeps our model clean, focused, and scalable.
Guided Families California is early-stage and building intentionally.
• Incorporated in California as a nonprofit (Entity No. B20260147000)
• EIN issued by the IRS (41-5204791)
• Actively working with families who have been denied or reduced
• Providing one-on-one guidance at no cost
• Currently applying for fiscal sponsorship
• Website and service model active at guidedfamiliesca.org
• Beginning to build partnerships across Los Angeles and surrounding areas
We are not trying to present ourselves as more established than we are.
We are at the stage where the right fiscal sponsor or partner can help us grow from a working model into something scalable and consistent.
How We Sustain Free Services
Guided Families California is currently volunteer-operated, with direct support provided by the founder.
Our model is intentionally low-cost and focused on guidance, preparation, and education rather than legal representation. This allows us to support families effectively without the overhead of a traditional service organization.
We are seeking fiscal sponsorship to:
• Formalize our structure under an established 501(c)(3)
• Access grant funding and institutional support
• Expand our capacity to serve more families statewide
Our goal is to build a sustainable model funded through grants and partnerships — not by charging families for help.
• Built from real experience
This work comes from firsthand experience navigating IHSS as a parent, not just studying the system from the outside.
• Always free
We do not charge families. Our model is built around access — making sure families can get help regardless of their financial situation.
• Focused on the moment families need help most
Most of the families we work with have already been denied or reduced. We step in when confusion is highest and guidance is hardest to find.
• Clear boundaries and structure
We focus on education and preparation, not legal representation. This keeps our model focused, scalable, and aligned for partnership.
We are seeking partnerships with organizations that support families of children with disabilities and understand the challenges of navigating IHSS.
We are specifically looking for:
• Fiscal sponsors open to supporting an early-stage organization with a clear mission and working model
• Referral partners who encounter families struggling with IHSS and want a trusted resource
• Opportunities to co-host workshops, trainings, or community events
• Letters of support to strengthen funding and sponsorship applications
Our goal is not to replace existing services — it is to strengthen the support families already receive by filling a gap that currently exists.
Partnering with Guided Families California provides a direct referral path for families who need IHSS guidance at no cost.
Whether you’re considering fiscal sponsorship, exploring a referral partnership, or simply want to learn more about what we’re building — we’d welcome the opportunity to connect.
We can provide:
• A one-page organizational overview
• Current operational and funding plans
• A direct conversation with the founder
